“The most durable shotgun on the planet. We experienced that issue, but after calling Remington, they sent us new front sights for all of our shotguns and we replaced them using red loctite which has solved the problem. The only issue we have had with our collection of 887s is that the front sight needs to be secured using epoxy or red loctite or it could pop off and be lost during normal police or military operations. I found during firearms qualification that our officers had no problem qualifying and they actually commented that they preferred the 887 over the 870 model. The felt recoil is suppressed quite a bit due to overall design and the recoil pad that comes standard. The slide (fore-end) release is slightly different and the fore-end itself is much longer. The 887 functions very similar to the 870 but has a few differences. When Remington released the 887 Tactical model, with the highly durable black-coated finish, our police department immediately switched Remington models and now we exclusively use the 887. The issue our agency had with the Remington 870 shotguns was that the finish required a great deal of maintenance due to the harsh salt air waterborne environment that comprises our jurisdiction. My police agency has used several different shotguns for normal everyday duty use, the Mossberg 500, the Remington 870, and now finally the Remington 887. Remington has now produced a shotgun specifically for law enforcement and military application, the model 887. I have also been a Remington armorer since 1995 therefore, I am very familiar with, and fond of, Remington shotguns, especially the 870. I have owned a Remington 870 shotgun, which I have used for police patrol and tactical duties, for over 25 years. Now, please do not misunderstand me, the 870 is a fine shotgun that is highly reliable and will last a lifetime, even in unforgiving environments. Remington Arms has a long history of manufacturing shotguns for law enforcement and military applications but until recently the most popular model, the Remington 870 12 gauge pump-action shotgun, was a converted hunting shotgun with a shorter barrel and a few tactical upgrades.
